Amelia Earhart's 115th Birthday

Todays Google Doodle reminds us of Amelia Earhart's 115th Birthday
Noted American aviatrix and author, Amelia Mary Earhart was a pioneer in the aviation community. After becoming the first aviatrix to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1928, she was the first woman to receive the U.S. Distinguished Flying Cross.

In 1937, while attempting to circumnavigate the world in a twin engine Lockheed Electra, Earhart disappeared near Howland Island in the Pacific Ocean. Her disappearance remains one of the greatest unsolved mysteries of the 20th century.

Her name alone is symbolic of aerospace achievement and therefore Civil Air Patrol has named one of it's most prestigious cadet achievements in her honor. The Amelia Earhart award,  the second milestone of the Cadet Program is earned after the completion of the first eleven achievements of the Cadet Program and the cadet must pass a comprehensive 100-question examination covering aerospace topics, leadership theory and staff duties. Cadets have earned this award since its inception in 1964.
