AIR SHOW. 29 Oct 2011 - we will go but times and specifics have not been established. I will send an email out. You must respond so I know if I need another van

ACADEMY /CTEP 11-13 Nov 2011 everybody needs to go to this. It is a weekend trip and if you plan to progress in CAP this is mandatory.

NASA trip, 22 Nov 2011, I am waiting for confirmation on this. Sign up is closed.

WINTER ENCAMPMENT last week of the year! We will have a special meeting to discuss plans -watch for email.

ORIENTATION - We will be scheduling a Saturday Orientation Day Soon. All new cadets must attend one, all others asked to attend.

IMPORTANT STUFF TO KNOW

Cadet Phone List -There is a current Cadet Phone list being sent out via email. The source of these numbers was either, my phone or eServices. If it is wrong, first check eServices and fix it there. THEN call me from the correct phone and tell me to update your information.

Emails - I am still not getting responses from a number of cadets. If you do not have regular / daily access to the email address that is listed next to your name in eServices, go into eService and fix it. If you can't access the Internet, it is YOUR responsibility to work it out with someone who has access to keep up with what you need to respond to.

eServices - You should be logging into eServices at least once per week. NO ONE should show up as "INCOMPLETE" for safety because when your safety is about to expire, there is a notice immediately when you log in. DO THE ONLINE SAFETY if you are getting close.

Cadet of the Quarter - We have not forgotten this. Some things that will be considered (and you will get a list.) - Attendance at Meetings - Attendance at Other Activities - Are you testing at least 1 x per month (average) - Did you promote this quarter? - Do you wear your uniform and wear it properly/meet grooming standards - Do you take initiative to do things - Are you a humble learner or do you think you know it all. - Did not allow Safety to Laps or have to be reminded - Do you call IN ADVANCE when you can not attend a meeting

Academic Award - If you have a 3.5GPA or better, as soon as you get your report card (not the interim,) please make a copy and give it to Major Moeller for your files (scanned pdf works) - Special Shoulder Cord will be worn on Blues

Sign In - From now on, cadets will sign in upon arrival - this will be kept separate from the sign-in for meetings, The first cadet to arrive will get the binder out and put it on the desk in the lobby for sign-in. When a cadet calls in, the Staff will indicate reason cadet is out (use discretion)

12 September 2011

Action required - cadets and parents take note!

DON'T MISS OUT!  National Special Activities is one of the best and most under utilized benefits in CAP. Check out what they have to offer and talk to C/1Lt Frederick ASAP about what to do - He has been tasked with helping you get there.

There is a National Activity for everyone regardless of your interest: Military, Aviation, Business, Engineering, Leadership, Honor Guard, Emergency Services, High Adventure activities, International Travel...... its there to be done.

Cost of these activities is very inexpensive and there are lots of scholarships for those who need assistance.

022 Represented at LA Wing Conference

This past weekend, LA Wing held the 2010 annual conference in Pineville, LA. Although it may late in the year to celebrate accomplishments for 2010, scheduling conflicts forced a delay of the event usually held in Spring.

This conference, held at Country Inn and Suites proved to be very successful with record numbers in attendance. Cadets in particular had an awesome showing with almost 50 in attendance, 33% of the cadet membership in the Wing. A very impressive jump from the 8-10 attending 2009 conference. This is just another sign that the cadet program in LA Wing is picking up speed. Ascension composite won the attendance award including $100 for the highest percentage of membership in attendance.

Among the highlights of the weekend, C/CMSgt received his promotion to 2nd Lt just before the change of command to transfer command of the Louisiana Wing Cadet program from Lt Col Fife to 2Lt Bolton. Lt Col Fife is not leaving us but she will be going off to college out of state. Special guests included Col Mary Fiek, Steve Trupp, Cadet Programs, CAP NHq, Col Buethe, SWR Commander and Col Gloyd, Vice Commander of CAP-USAF.

Much fun was had at the cadet social, luau on Friday night. Saturday highlights included presentation by Mary Fiek, updates from NHq on cadet programs and a DDR Skit directed by C/SrMSgt Delbasty and a combination of cadets from Ascension, Lake Charles, Barksdale and Capital City. All in all, the weekend was a success.

A special THANK YOU goes out the Major David Taylor who, even though his cadets were traveling with parents, drove the Hammond van to transport and Room with Ascension in order for us to have enough room for all the cadets traveling with us.

SAREX Continues thru meeting tonight

The SAREX activity will continue throughout the regular meeting tonight. Be there early if you can. The plan as of Saturday was to have briefing and then some evening Sorties for both ground and aircrews.

NOTE CHANGE : Cadets uniform is BDU tonight, not Blues.

Due to activities tonight, we may be at the airport later. Cadets MAY plan to stay later than usual especially if they leave on ground team mission. Get this approved by parents in advanced!!!!

Group 3 SAREX benefits many

This SAREX has been a little different than the past in a couple ways. One is that it stretches over an extended period of time and the other is the nature of most of the training.

Much of today's training centered around Photo Recon which, if you've ready the Volunteer magazine this month, you can tell that much of the tasking is related to Photography.

That's not to say that UDF (Urban Direction Finding) is no longer taught but Photography just gets added to our list of skills. Today cadets and Aircrews alike did there share of photography and our newer cadets spent time learning about DF'ing from Major Moeller.

The day wrapped up around 1900 and the cadets headed off the catch the launch of balloons but weather cut that trip short when the balloons were grounded.

All in all, a successful and (as always with cadets) fun filled day.

Group 3 Sarex

The Group 3 Emergency Services Training (SAREX) that was postponed last month has been rescheduled and will be hosted by Ascension Composite Squadron and operating out of Louisiana Regional Airport (L38).

This SAREX will run from 5 AUG thru 15 AUG. Sorties with be spread over the entire period, somewhat like the Sorties flown for the LA Flood missions. There will be day and Evening sorties to help pilots maintain night currency. There will be ground Team Sorties as well as need for cadets as mission staff assistants and radio operations. Authorized Cadets who have, or will soon be attaining their 18th birthdate may begin training for Aircrews positions (you can not actually fly missions until after your birthday.)

There is a job for every cadet who is willing to serve the mission and will behave in a professional manner. If serious about serving in Emergency Services, go to the Emergency Services tab above and begin your training, THEN contact Major Moeller to find out what your next step should be.

Ascension Composite was proud to boast that 9 of our cadets participated in the 2011 LA Flood Mission. Those Cadets were: Gaudin, Rome, Tressitt, Dennis, Kelley, Pike, Blank, Delbasty, Kallenberger, some are seen below assisting Major Brummett and operating Radios. Cadets are a vital part of our Emergency Services Operations.

Group 2 SAREX / Balloon Fest this weekend

GROUP 3 SAREX will begin this weekend with briefing and training on Saturday. This will be an all day activity. NEW Cadets who meet the following qualifications may report ( contact Lt Pike for approval and times):

Minimum Qualifications:
- Complete BDU & compliant w/ 39-1 (canteen/camel back approved)
- Passed Leadership Chapter One test
- Passed General Emergency Services test 116 (Emergency Services tab above)
- Have a desire to work WITH the Senior members and prepare to serve on real missions.
Cadets with prior ES experience are needed. When short on Incident Command staff and IC staff are wearing two or three hats, experienced cadets are needed more than ever to help fill the gaps. If you can come Saturday, it would be appreciated!

Please email your availability to both: Lt Pike AND Lt Col Collins who is Incident Commander for this SAREX.

BALLOON FESTIVAL: Due to lack of response, no formal plans are being made to attend the balloon festival, however, after the SAREX activity Saturday, we may make a run to the festival for the balloon glow.

End of school, Washington, DC trip 2012

We tried planning a trip to Washington, D.C. last year and it didn't work out, but new options have been added that may make the trip affordable at a price less than $500 per cadet.

Points of interest include, but are not limited to: Andrews Air Force Base, Arlington National Cemetery, Pentagon, Air and Space Museum, Memorial Day Parade, And More!

A trip like this requires advanced planning, authorization, and deposits. Cadets interested in such a trip should notify Lt. Pike as soon as possible so a determination can be made as to whether or not there is enough interest to warrent further action toward this event.

Catching Up!

Sorry I have been slow to update the blog. Meetings were kind of slow this last month - seems the Senior Members were often tied up with other activities. Hopefully, April will be a stronger attendance month. BUT, as usual, our cadets have maintained and are growing!

We have 3 new recruits who have decided to join. Major Smith has been doing a little recruiting and C/Sgt Tressitt is truly earning his title as recruiter. C/Rome's recruit will be turning in his application next Monday. Now we SM's need to get moving in the recruiting department to keep up.

Here is synopsis of what has been happening in LA022 these last couple of months.

SPECIAL ATTENTION NEEDED

Airport Lease agreement: Things are not looking very good in this area. The way it looks, we will be given the choice of paying a monthly rent we can not afford or moving out. We need all the support we can get from all members, parents and community leaders. Please contact a Senior Member to find out what you can do.

THIS IS AN URGENT MATTER

St Patrick's Day Parade - We had we had three Marshalls from our squadron for a total of $165.00 raised for the squadron.

CORRECTION: 5 marshals for total of $275

DAR Award to Cadet: C/Gaudin presented with award by local chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) in recognition of her citizenship and patriotism through the Civil Air Patrol.

Ascension In the news (Articles that appeared in the Advocate recently):

Ascesnion Squadron Earns Honor (Ascesnion Section)

Wreaths Across America: Lt Col Collins is making progress on Wreaths Across America. It's not to early to start asking employers to consider a business sponsorship of wreaths for this very worthy event. Check this link out to see what it is all about.

Hovercraft! Thanks to Capital City Composite Squadron, we were finally able to get the long awaited hovercraft "flying." Major Smith, Major Moeller and Lt Ravey were able to get it working during the last to Aerospace meetings and all cadets and our guests were able to get a ride. Much fun ! ! !

O-flights: We had 6 O-flight Sorties this past month Plane Status: As of last Monday night, "Charlie Papa" was still not back from the 100 hour maintenance. As soon as we get it back, Lt Col Collins will be putting more Sorties in for O-Flights. REMEMBER: Our policy is 1 per achievement (promotion) and those who have not flown have first priority.

Office Clean-up: You may have noticed some changes in the office. Clean-up and reorganization is in progress. If you can't find something, ask Lt Pike! If it was in there, it's still there - it just may have a new home.

Hanger Clean-up and Uniform status: Hanger may appear more organized simply because the uniforms are getting straight. We are weeding out. We will keep an assortment of sizes in "Blues" and have kept 2 boxes of donated BDUs that were in good shape. Please see C/First Sgt Blank for uniform issues.

Upcoming:

Wing / CAC / Commanders Call meeting this weekend. These meetings are open to all if interested.

Status of DC trip - Everything is on hold until I hear from Southwest Airlines. I have made a proposal to their Charitable Giving program and it is in review. If we get the donation of tickets or even a substantial discount, the trip will be a "go," if not, the trip is a "no go" due to the cost of airfare. It could be the end of April before we know.

C-17 - O-Flight: TSA list has been finalized. Those who are going should have a Parent Information Sheet covering all details.

CTEP/Academy coming up April 8th-10th. Get your registration in! Cadets MUST have Curry BEFORE we leave.

Library Grand Re-opening ceremony at the Ascension Parish Library on Cornerview in Gonzales is April 16th. Honor Guard has been requested to post Colors and as many cadets as possible are asked to attend - Full class A's - We need a strong showing. The library is going to start working with us to get the word out about CAP. This will go a long way toward our issues with the Airport. April 26, we need ALL cadets (Class A with Service Coat) and ALL parents and anyone else you can bring to the Airport Authority Meeting. Even if you won't be speaking, we need a major show of support for C.A.P.

26 February 2011

PARENTS / ADULTS we need your help!

Hey! We need parents to work the St Pats day parade. Think about it, how many cars would you have to wash, candy you would have to sell or sponsors you would have to get to clear $55 cash for the squadron? A LOT. Get both parents, aunts, uncles....etc to marshal (watch) the parade and earn $55 for each person for the squadron.... Must be 21 years-old or older. EASY MONEY!

Also, there is a possibility that the Color Guard Competition could be held here at Lamar-Dixon. This is still in the proposal stage.

GENERAL MEETING ADJOURNED @ 19:40
CADET ANNOUNCEMENTS:
**See Email regarding Washington DC trip. There will be rank requirements and some of you will have to work hard to meet them, others will not meet them and will not be able to attend this trip. There will be others in the future. On a trip like this, we must ensure that those attending are very capable of managing themselves and therefore minimum grade for this trip will be Senior Airman. Other requirements were discussed and will be in an email to come out this week.
** eServices has a report that renders the recent promotion tracking form obsolete. If you have not seen it, there is a link on the left column of eServices called Cadet Promotion Tracking report. Monitor this report to ensure that your information has been entered.
**Leadership expectations reiterated. Last week we discussed these as it relates to Phase I and Phase II cadets. Note that all cadets are to help junior cadets with uniform issues as well as knowing what to do and how to do it. When a Jr Cadet is identified as being out of compliance, it is not a reflection on that cadet (he/she does not know better) it is the cadets around that are noted as having a deficiency.
**Academy / CTEP - Let C/Dpty Commander Sgt Kelley know if you are going. He will be coordinating this trip. NOTE: If you have not had ALS or been to encampment, this is a must for the Washington Trip.
**O-Flights: The following cadets will have O-Flights this weekend, Cadet Pike, Tuggle, Gaudin, Snyder. See Sgt Blank for what you need to know. NOTE: You MUST have complete uniform to fly.

REPORTS:
Counter Drug / Comms.:
Major Brummett reports still no money from Congress for CD missions but there is a little for O-flights.
News from Wing Staff Meeting: Capital City will have a small Sarex next weekend for those interested. Wing staff was pleasantly surprised by the recent announcement from National regarding the new Quality Unit award (more on that later)
Cadet Programs: CG Competition this weekend - we have dropped some attendees but still need 2 vans

Lt Pike explained the Quality Cadet Unit award (see article on blog) Basically, Ascension Composite Squadron was one of 118 units nationwide (top 10%) who earned the new award. We were the only unit in the state to earn this distinction which is based on 8 criteria determined to be indicators of a quality unit. Ascension was listed as having met 5 of the 8 (the minimum to earn the award) but the fact that we did earn the AEX award was not reflected in the report so we in fact achieve 6 of 8 which is super!
Of the 8 criteria, the majority are specifically related to cadets participation, progression and hard work. This is truly a reflection on the awesome cadets in our unit. We are all extremely proud of their hard work.
Its one thing to know the award criteria and do what it takes to earn an award, but to not even know that an award exist and to demonstrate outstanding performance without expectation of award is true excellence.

Commander: Lt Col Collins reports that they are still in negotiations with the airport authority.
St Paticks Day Parade Fundraiser: Sign up sheet for St Patricks day parade marshalls went around. This year the squadron will earn $55 per Marshall. This is easy money and you get to watch the parade with your family. Cadets are encouraged to ask parents, aunts, uncles...etc. Marhsalls must be 21. Please contact Lt Col Collins about participating! We need all the help we can get.
Quality Cadet Unit Award: Lt Col Collins stressed the importance of this award and noted that the cadets have earned Ascension Composite some excellent recognition. He went on to stress how proud he is of the cadets.
O-Flights: After we return from this weekend at Barksdale, we WILL start scheduling O-Flights, regardless of weather the funds come from the wing or from our squadron, it will happen.

Promotions: C/MSgt Tressitt apologized to the cadets for not preparing the reports needed to do promotion ceremony tonight. Cadets who have not been pinned with new rank will be pinned next week.
GENERAL MEETING ADJOURNED @ 19:30
CADET MEETING:
Focus Topic:
Leadership Expectations / Phase I and Phase II
Lt Pike, with the assistance of C/CC Sgt Delbasty, reviewed the importance of understanding the leadership expectations, using the Form 50 as a self assessment and knowing how they can effect promotions.
**Color Guard Team did not attend this class. They practiced Flag Folding with C/Sgt Blank

Meeting Minutes 2 Feb 2011
Week #1Safety Briefing / Cadet Emergency Services Focus

Facilitator: Cadet SSgt C.Pike. C/Safety Officer
** C/Safety Officer is a new position. Tonight was the first time we had our C/SO give the Safety briefing, so we just decided to let him facilitate the meeting too!

Attendance:
SM:(7) Collins, Brummett, Smith, Attuso, Ravey, Pike, Eiswirth, Moeller,
Cadets: (11) Delbasty, Kelley, Blank, Tressitt, Rome, C.Pike, Gaudin , Ravey, Dennis, H.Pike, Snyder,

Guest Intro
(no guest present)
REPORTS:
Counter Drug / Comms.:
Major Brummett reports still no money from Congress for CD missions and nothing big with Comms. National is tossing around ideas about nets and stuff but nothing earth shattering.

Aerospace Education: Major Smith reminded us that we are going to try to take a spin on the Hover Craft next AE Meeting.

Safety: Capt Attuso reviewed some statistics from the most recent Safety Newsletter from National. All stats were positive with a significant improvement and in some cases elimination of incidents. Capt Attuso also reminds us that the online reporting is also for suggestions and that now we report "Close Calls" as well so we can learn from these too.

Cadet Programs: Still getting ready for CG Competition. Nothing new to report.

Commander: Lt Col Collins reports that they are still in negotiations with the airport authority. Their are some new people and the AA is short on funds so they are still trying to get us to take on duties which have been provided under contract with another company. Many of these duties are questionable with regard to insurance. We may need to look at other avenues for payment of rent. (This discussion continued among Senior members after the General Meeting)

SAFETY BRIEFING: Operational Risk Management
Cadet Safety Officer did a good job of reviewing the concepts of ORM and all are encouraged to go online and take the full ORM course and test.
We are proud of how this cadet not only handle the briefing but the unexpected bomb we dropped that he would facilitate the whole meeting. Well Done C/SSgt Pike.

GENERAL MEETING ADJOURNED @ 19:25

CADET MEETING:
Focus Topic: Emergency Services / ICS100 overview
Major Moeller gave an overview of ICS100 which is a FEMA / NIMS course everybody is required to take as part of Emergency Service Qualifications.

Lt Pike closed by advising those in the class that this DOES NOT count as ICS100. You must take the course online and pass the test in order for it to count.

Lt. Ravey advised that it is not a short course, allow yourself a few hours to go through the online course.

Emergency Services ran over so cadets did not hit the Drill pad until 20:25. Color Guard spent a little time practicing and we did not get out of the airport until close to 21:00 (target time is 20:30)

Commander Collins: We are currently in negotiations with the Airport Authority for "in-Kind" service agreement to renew our lease. As you may know, we have been doing work around the airport to pay for lease. They have changed it up a little and this has to go all the way up to NHq then back down through the Wing CC. In the mean time we will continue to put the trash out on Mondays and ensure the building is left clean and maintain the bathrooms at the end of the Hanger Building. Cooperation and Assistance is requested.
Cadet Programs –
- Importance of Confirming attendance at activities:

  • We now have 14 cadets ACTIVE and we often have a very high participation rate for activities
  • Our van seats Driver plus 11. If we have 12 or more cadets and/or seniors planning to attend, we need to give Commander Collins time to arrange to use another squadron’s van.
  • This is NOT A PROBLEM but we need to have accurate numbers and need to plan!
NOTE: It would not be good if we borrowed a van because we needed 1 more spot and then one person just did not show up.

- Rough Count for Competition is 16 people and Commander has made a request to CCCS for use of their van. I need a hard number of those planning to attend.

  • Leaving 2/18 and returning 2/20, 2 nights at Barksdale, Est Money needed per cadet is $50 for the weekend.

- 9 cadets and 2 Seniors were certified in CPR/AED and First Aid this weekend
- We were invited to attend a Military Ball hosted by Pontchartrain squadron March 19. I need a head count.
- FYI: LeJuenes Cleaners on Burnside offers military discounts – present ID.

FOCUS TOPIC: Core Values/ Character Development
- What are the CORE VALUES? Respect / Integrity / Volunteer Service / Excellence (Thank you Cadet Airman Pike)
- What are the differences is expectations of Phase I cadets and Phase II cadets with regard to the Core Values?

  • Phase I – Display knowledge of the Core Values
  • Phase II – Maintain the Core Values and teach new cadets.
  • Senior Members – Of course, we should set the example for the cadets.
NOTE: Phase I goes through C/SSgt. All of our Cadet Staff are in Phase II now.

- Tonight the cadets are wearing the USAF style blues. They have almost all heard what they call the “Right Shoulder” speech from C/CC Delbasty where he stresses behavior and wear of the uniform. FYI The US Flag is on the Right Shoulder of the BDU uniform.
- Tonight’s Core Value presentation is simply a Music Video, cadets come close so you can see and hear this.

On Saturday, 8 Jan 2011, at the Wing Meeting/Commanders Call, Colonel Art Scarborough, LAWING Commander transferred command of Group 3 to Major Christine Richmond. It is our intent to adjust the meeting so we can dismiss at 20:30. In order to do this, we have to move from one thing to the next without a lot of confusion and chaos. Everybody knows that we need chairs out for the meeting at 19:00 and picked up at general closing - no one should have to say anything to make these things happen. I know, this will get easier once we get the schedule defined and posted.

PT Testing: None tonight as Lt Ravey is not present

Promotions will be done on Week 2. Cadets who promote during the previous month will be officially "pinned" with new rank on the 2nd Monday of the month. We will continue to plan a couple of larger promotion ceremonies throughout the year. We look forward to seeing a couple of Mitchell awards later this year!

    DCC Comments to Cadets:
Uniform Issue: I want to stress the issue of uniforms and grooming standards. This is not new to you all. In general, our squadron has improved considerably in the proper wear of uniforms and we have already pointed out that grooming standards will be monitored more closely. I want to point out the effect a uniform violation can have. Not only does if reflect poorly on you, your squadron and the wing but be aware that if we happen to get some good photos of the cadets at an event and just one of the cadets forgot his ranks or did not meet grooming standards, that picture is useless. Keep this in mind every time you put that uniform on - wear it properly and ensure you are not on the boarder line of meeting the standards. Exceed the standards! We have been asked to be a standard bearers on this issue.

Drill Instruction - "To the Rear"

Dismissal 21:08 (we have a way to go to get to 20:30)
